These mini blooming onions are crispy, golden, and irresistibly delicious. Made healthier in the air fryer, they’re perfect for snacking or sharing at parties.

Ingredients

  • Small yellow onions (tennis ball-sized)
  • All-purpose flour
  • Eggs
  • Panko bread crumbs
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Salt
  • Black pepper
  • Olive oil spray
  • Dipping sauce (e.g., ranch dressing, spicy mayo, or mustard-based sauce)

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and cut off the top, leaving the root intact. Slice the onion into 8-12 sections, stopping about ½ inch from the root to keep the base intact.
  2. Place the cut onions in a bowl of ice water for 10 minutes to help the petals open up.
  3. In one bowl, mix flour with the seasoning mix. In a second bowl, beat the eggs. In a third bowl, add the breadcrumbs.
  4. Pat the onions dry, then coat them in the flour mixture, dip them in the eggs, and finish with breadcrumbs. Ensure the petals are evenly coated.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3 minutes.
  6. Spray the onions lightly with olive oil and place them in the air fryer basket. Cook for 12-15 minutes, checking halfway through and spraying again if needed.
  7. Once golden and crispy, remove the onions and serve them hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For best results, ensure the onions are completely dry before coating. Use a light, even spray of olive oil for crispiness. If the petals don’t open up, gently separate them with your fingers before dredging.
