This Blood Orange Halloween Margarita is a vibrant, spooky cocktail featuring fresh blood orange juice, tequila, and a dramatic black sugar rim. It’s easy to make, visually stunning, and perfect for Halloween parties or any festive fall gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 23 blood oranges, freshly squeezed (about 2 oz juice per drink)
  • 2 oz (60ml) tequila blanco
  • 1 oz (30ml) orange liqueur (Cointreau, Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier)
  • 1 oz (30ml) fresh lime juice
  • 0.51 oz (15–30ml) simple syrup or agave syrup, to taste
  • Ice (enough to fill shaker and glasses)
  • Black sanding sugar (about 3 tbsp) for rim
  • Lime wedge (for rimming glass)
  • Optional garnishes: blood orange slices, fresh rosemary sprigs, gummy worms or candy eyeballs

Instructions

  1. Pour about 3 tablespoons of black sanding sugar onto a small plate.
  2. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass to moisten it.
  3. Dip the rim into the black sugar, twisting gently to coat. Let dry for 2 minutes.
  4. Slice and juice 2–3 blood oranges per drink to yield about 2 oz juice. Strain if desired.
  5. In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 oz blood orange juice, 2 oz tequila blanco, 1 oz orange liqueur, 1 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.5–1 oz simple syrup (to taste).
  6. Fill shaker with ice, cover, and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds.
  7. Fill the sugar-rimmed glass halfway with fresh ice.
  8. Strain the margarita over the ice.
  9. Garnish with a blood orange slice, rosemary sprig, or spooky candy as desired.
  10. Serve immediately while cold and rim is crisp.

Notes

If blood oranges are out of season, substitute with regular orange juice plus a splash of pomegranate or cranberry juice for color. For a smoky twist, use mezcal instead of tequila. Adjust sweetness with more or less simple syrup. For a non-alcoholic version, use orange-flavored sparkling water and grenadine. Chill glasses in advance for best results. If making for a crowd, mix in a pitcher and shake individual servings with ice.
