  • 1/4 cup (about 50g) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup (about 50g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Pinch of garlic powder (optional)
  • Optional extras: tomato slices, crispy bacon, fresh basil leaves

Instructions

  1. Lay out two slices of bread on a clean surface. Spread a thin, even layer of softened unsalted butter on one side of each slice. Optionally, mix a pinch of garlic powder into the butter before spreading.
  2. Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, onto a work surface or plate. Add a generous handful (about 1/4 cup) of shredded sharp cheddar evenly over the bread. Top with an equal amount of shredded mozzarella.
  3. If desired, add optional extras such as thin tomato slices, crispy bacon, or fresh basil leaves on top of the cheese layers.
  4. Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing up.
  5. Preheat a non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-low heat.
  6. Carefully transfer the sandwich to the pan. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side, pressing gently with a spatula to encourage even browning and melting. When the bottom is golden brown and crispy, flip carefully.
  7. Cook the other side for another 4-5 minutes until golden and the cheese is melted and gooey.
  8. Check the melt by gently lifting the top bread slice. If the cheese isn’t fully melted, lower the heat and cook a bit longer, covering the pan loosely with a lid if needed.
  9. Remove from the pan and let sit for a minute. Slice diagonally and serve warm.

Notes

Use medium-low heat to avoid burning the bread before the cheese melts. For extra melty cheese, cover the pan with a lid during the last minute of cooking. Softened butter spread evenly on the bread creates a golden crust. Optional add-ons like tomato, bacon, or basil can enhance flavor. For dairy-free or gluten-free versions, substitute ingredients accordingly.
