Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups whole milk (960 ml) or almond/oat milk for dairy-free option
  • ½ cup (50 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground cardamom
  • Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg (optional)
  • Tiny pinch of sea salt
  • About 20 pieces store-bought Danish butter cookies (e.g., Royal Dansk) or homemade
  • 68 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows (optional)
  • ½ cup dark chocolate shavings or chunks (optional)
  • Crushed peppermint candy or candy canes (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 4 cups whole milk, ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, and ¾ cup granulated sugar. Whisk gently over medium heat until cocoa powder dissolves fully without lumps.
  2. Stir in 1 tsp vanilla extract, ½ tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp ground cardamom, a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg, and a tiny pinch of sea salt. Continue whisking as the mixture warms to infuse the spices.
  3. Keep the cocoa at a gentle simmer (not boiling) for 2–3 minutes, whisking occasionally. Ensure it is hot but not scalding.
  4. While the cocoa heats, arrange Danish butter cookies on a large wooden board or platter. Place small bowls of mini marshmallows, chocolate chunks, and cinnamon sticks around the cookies. Add mugs ready for pouring the hot cocoa.
  5. Pour the hot cocoa into mugs, topping with marshmallows or chocolate shavings as desired. Stir with a cinnamon stick for extra aroma and spice.
  6. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use a heavy-bottomed saucepan to avoid scorching. Whisk slowly to dissolve cocoa powder fully and avoid lumps. Heat milk gently to prevent skin formation. Adjust spices to taste. Serve cookies at room temperature for best flavor. Prepare cocoa ahead but reheat gently without boiling. Substitute dairy-free milk and cookies for vegan or allergy-friendly versions.
