  1. Soften the cream cheese by letting it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes or microwave in 10-second bursts until just soft but not melted.
  2. Using an electric mixer, whip the cream cheese on medium speed until creamy and smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until fully incorporated and fluffy.
  4. Gently fold in whipped topping with a spatula, mixing just enough to combine without deflating the fluffiness.
  5. Stir in crushed candy canes, folding carefully to keep some crunch without breaking everything down to powder. Save a little for garnish.
  6. If using, add a drop or two of red food coloring and gently swirl it into the dip for a festive look.
