A quick and easy creamy mac and cheese made right in a mug in just 5 minutes, perfect for busy nights or comforting snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • ¼ cup (30g) dry elbow macaroni
  • ¼ cup (60ml) water
  • ¼ cup (60ml) milk (whole or 2%, or dairy-free milk if needed)
  • ½ cup (56g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon (14g) unsalted butter, softened
  • Pinch of salt, to taste
  • Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • Optional: dash of garlic powder, smoked paprika, or sprinkle of Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Add the dry macaroni and water to your microwave-safe mug. The pasta should be just covered or slightly submerged. Stir once to prevent sticking.
  2. Microwave on high for 2 minutes. Carefully stir the pasta with a fork or whisk to separate the noodles.
  3. Continue microwaving in 1-minute bursts, stirring after each minute. Typically, it takes 4–5 minutes total for the pasta to become tender but still firm. Add a splash of water if drying out.
  4. Once pasta is cooked, add butter, shredded cheddar, and milk to the mug. Stir vigorously to create a creamy sauce.
  5. Microwave for another 30-60 seconds to melt the cheese fully and thicken the sauce. Stir again to combine.
  6. Add salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  7. Let it rest for a minute before eating to allow flavors to meld and sauce to thicken.

Notes

Stir frequently during microwaving to prevent pasta from clumping and ensure even cooking. Use freshly shredded cheese for best melting. Let the mug rest after cooking to thicken the sauce. Adjust microwave times based on your appliance’s power. For gluten-free, substitute pasta with chickpea or lentil-based pasta. For dairy-free, use plant-based milk and vegan cheese.
