A quick and easy party snack featuring crispy tater tots loaded with seasoned ground beef, melted cheddar cheese, and fresh toppings like jalapeños, avocado, and salsa.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 32 ounces frozen tater tots (about 900 grams)
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese (about 200 grams)
  • 1/2 pound ground beef (about 225 grams), cooked and seasoned with taco spices (cumin, chili powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper)
  • 12 jalapeños, sliced thin (fresh or pickled)
  • 3 stalks green onions, chopped
  • 1 medium ripe avocado, diced
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (120 ml)
  • 1/2 cup fresh salsa (120 ml), homemade or store-bought
  • 1/2 cup black beans (optional, 120 grams), rinsed and drained
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (15 ml)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place a wire rack on top if you have one.
  2. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer on the wire rack or directly on the parchment. Bake for 25-30 minutes, turning halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  3. While the tots bake, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula, until browned, about 6-8 minutes.
  4. Season the beef with 1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon chili powder, 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Once tots are crispy, remove them from the oven. Sprinkle shredded cheddar evenly over the tots, then spoon the seasoned ground beef on top.
  6. Return the tray to the oven for 5-7 minutes or until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly.
  7. Remove from oven and immediately top with sliced jalapeños, chopped green onions, diced avocado, black beans (if using), dollops of sour cream, and spoonfuls of fresh salsa.
  8. Serve hot and enjoy immediately for the best crispy-cheesy contrast.

Notes

Use a wire rack to keep tots crispy on all sides. Avoid overcrowding the baking sheet. Slice avocado just before serving to prevent browning. For vegetarian or dairy-free versions, substitute ground beef with black beans or plant-based meat and use vegan cheese and coconut yogurt instead of sour cream. Reheat leftovers in the oven to maintain crispiness; avoid microwaving.
