These Festive Turkey Donuts are a fun and easy Thanksgiving treat for kids, featuring adorable turkey-inspired decorations and a sweet, fluffy texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or substitute with 1 cup milk + 1 tablespoon vinegar)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Colored candy melts (orange, red, yellow, and brown)
  • Candy eyes
  • Mini pretzels (for feathers)
  • Chocolate chips (for the beak)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease your donut pan and set it aside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Transfer the batter to a piping bag and pipe it into the prepared donut molds, filling each about 3/4 full.
  6. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the donuts are lightly golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Remove the pan from the oven and let the donuts cool for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Place each color of candy melt in a separate microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 20-second intervals, stirring in between, until fully melted and smooth.
  9. Dip each donut into the melted chocolate to create the base color (brown for the turkey’s body). Let the chocolate set for a few minutes.
  10. Use melted candy to attach mini pretzels as feathers, candy eyes, and chocolate chips for the beak. Pipe small details like the wattle using red melted candy.

Notes

[‘Don’t overmix the batter to keep the donuts light and fluffy.’, ‘Cool donuts completely before decorating to prevent candy melts from sliding off.’, ‘Encourage kids to be creative with their decorations.’, ‘Donuts can be made a day ahead and stored in an airtight container before decorating.’]
